Improvised Music at Music @ The MATT
The Mattatuck Museum welcomes Stephen Haynes and the Button Trio to First Thursday: Music @ The MATT on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. for an evening of improvised, site-specific sound structure. The musical performance will take place in the Museum’s Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery on the 2nd floor. The trio includes Haynes on cornet and flugelhorn, guitarist Joe Morris and Tyshawn Sorey on drums and percussion. This is music that lives purely in the moment: improvised and built from the ground up in the company of their listeners.
Haynes and Morris curate, and perform in, the long-running Improvisations Concert Series at Hartford's Real Art Ways. As a composer and drummer, Tyshawn Sorey is one of today's most exciting young artists. Be prepared to be surprised and delighted with this trio.
Haynes is an improvising composer and arts activist; a multi-instrumentalist who performs on cornets, trumpets and more. Haynes is also a longtime specialist in modern orchestra work and has graced the ensemble of George Russell, La Monte Young, Cecil Taylor and Butch Morris to name a few. He is currently a member of the Adam Rudolph’s Go: Organic Orchestra. Dan Barry from the Hartford Advocate says, “…strange and sweet and, above all, skilled…Haynes and his work pioneer rich new territory in the arts of composition and improvisation.”
First Thursday, a fun after hours event, is a great way to meet up with friends, network with business associates and enjoy live music. Admission is $10 for Museum members and $15 for non-members.
