NVCC- Waterbury AmeriCorps is looking for civic-minded individuals to serve as community advocates and mentors throughout the city beginning this fall. Now entering its second year, the program will accept up to 60 applicants with experience or a desire to improve quality of life for Waterbury and its youth. Applications are currently being accepted at nv.edu/americorps.

At its core, NVCC-Waterbury AmeriCorps is both a mentoring program and a community service team. Members work directly with students in Waterbury public schools through in- and after-school programs, providing assistance with school work to and building positive relationships with students. They also create and implement community service projects throughout the year that promote volunteerism in Waterbury. 

In return, members receive a laptop computer, training in mentoring and tutoring, experience for college or career advancement, the opportunity to take college classes and an educational award of up to $1,468 to be used toward personal education costs or for a child or grandchild’s education.

Members currently include students from NVCC and UCONN Waterbury as well as civic-minded individuals who want to make an impact in their community.Qualified applicants will be 17 years or older, possess a high school diploma or agree to obtain one before using the education award, be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and commit to one year of service (450 hours total) toward the program.

The Waterbury AmeriCorps Program is a part of the Naugatuck Valley Community College Bridge to College Office and is funded by the Connecticut Commission for Community Service.

Naugatuck Valley Community College was established in 1992 with the merging of Waterbury State Technical College and Mattatuck Community College as a public, two-year, associate degree granting, co-educational, non-residential institution. Approximately 11,000 degree and 5,000 non-degree students enroll annually in over 100 accredited and non-credit lifelong learning programs at the College to fulfill their educational goals.

The College is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Connecticut Board of Governors for Higher Education and several programs maintain specialized accreditations.
