Take a tour with The Mattatuck Museum on Sunday, June 3, 2012 and spend a leisurely afternoon with architectural historian Rachel Carley, discovering The Secrets and Surprises of Litchfield Connecticut.

Join architectural historian Rachel Carley on a tour of Litchfield, where you will explore the village’s many surprising layers of history-from Native American hunting grounds to buildings by the Modern Masters—while traveling picturesque back roads and hidden byways. Ms. Carley is the author of the recently published Litchfield: The Making of a New England Town, the first history of Litchfield book to be published in nearly 100 years.

The bus tour concludes with a visit to the Litchfield Historical Society, where participants can explore the collections and new exhibit Civil War: The Hour of Conflict. Examine letters, diaries, photographs, and artifacts from the Historical Society's collections including articles carried by local soldiers, everyday objects used by Litchfield's children, and items related to Dr. Josiah Gale Beckwith and the Litchfield Peace Movement.

Participants will meet at the Mattatuck Museum, the bus will depart promptly at 1:00pm from the front entrance of the museum, and will return to the Mattatuck at 5:00pm. Registration is required. Admission to The Secrets and Surprises of Litchfield Connecticut Bus Tour is $15 for museum members and $20 for non-members. Join the museum to immediately qualify for the member discount. The Mattatuck Museum is operated with support from the Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts, and is a member of the Connecticut Art Trail, sixteen world-class museums and historic sites (www.arttrail.org). Located at 144 West Main Street, Waterbury, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. Convenient, free parking is located behind the museum on Park Place.
